Suzhou will implement a new regulation to step up protection of the city’s water towns including Tongli, Zhouzhuang and Qiandeng. The new regulation will become effective on March 1.
The regulation clarifies the principles of water town protection, sources of funds and detailed contents of protection. Illegal construction and renovation in core areas and buffer zone of historical sites, illegal garbage dumping and sewage discharge, hanging personal belongings or airing laundries on the railings in public areas will be prohibited, according to the regulation.
The regulation offers guidance on sustainable development and preservation of the city’s water town culture, said Chen Laisheng, chairman of the city’s Tourism Culture Promotion Association.
