Suzhou has set up six sets of road surveillance cameras to crack down on drivers who do not give way to pedestrians at crosswalks.
In the past six months, 15,793 drivers not giving way to pedestrians were caught by the cameras and 26,630 drivers were caught by policemen on-site. Next, 62 new sets of cameras will be installed at 30 places across the city.
Suzhou traffic police launched a winter action plan and a 40-day campaign to enhance traffic regulations enforcement in the middle of November. So far, the traffic police have cracked down on 1.57 million traffic violations with 385,000 rule-breaking drivers caught on-site.
The number of fatal traffic accidents and the death tolls dropped 26.57 and 26.53 percent respectively from the same period of last year. Meanwhile, the traffic performance index dropped 8.7 percent year-on-year.
